2019 Marine Conservation Initiative Grantee Retreat
You are invited to the Marine Conservation Initiative’s Grantee Retreat from November 4 – 7 at the Granville Island Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada!
This collaborative and interactive meeting will bring together grantees from across Canada and the United States with the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation’s Marine Conservation Initiative staff.
The current goals of this Retreat include:
- Celebrate your accomplishments and acknowledge the tremendous opportunities at hand.
- Share our strategy for change and measuring progress in habitat protection, sustainable fisheries, and enabling conditions.
- Introduce grantees to share your work and expertise and build this community for maximum impact.
- Leave feeling grounded, inspired, and having had some fun together to be as ready as possible for the upcoming years.
We will do this by experimenting with different ways of collaborating and learning from each other, organizing around concrete challenges, and developing plans where appropriate on critical next steps by and across strategies and issues.

NOTE: This invitation is not transferable to others in your organization. We have limited space for this Retreat and can only invite a small number of carefully-selected individuals. Please contact your Program Officer with any questions.
Start and End Times:
The Retreat will begin with a Dinner Reception at 6:00pm on Monday, November 4. The Retreat will end on Thursday, November 7 by 12:00pm.
**The Start and End Date and Times were established to provide those who are traveling with enough flexibility to attend the whole meeting. However, your program officer may be in touch about targeted meetings and/or available meeting space before or after the main event in order to take advantage of having everyone together.**
Granville Island Hotel is located on Granville Island in Vancouver, British Columbia overlooking the waterfront and downtown, about 30 minutes from the Vancouver International Airport. United States citizens traveling to Canada will need a current passport. For further information, please refer to the US Department of State website.

Lodging: We will book your hotel accommodations at Granville Island Hotel. Unless otherwise requested through this portal, each grantee will be reserved a room for the nights of November 4, 5, and 6. Grantees requesting additional nights or different room accommodations may do so at their own personal expense. Please contact Stephanie at email@example.com no later than September 6 if you require accommodations that do not meet the previously mentioned guidelines.
Flights: You will be responsible for booking your flights to arrive and depart around the meeting start and end times. The nearest airport is the Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Reimbursement will be for coach (economy) fare travel only.
Carpooling: If you are interested in carpooling to and from the airport, we have established a ride share board for you to communicate and set up meet-ups for shared taxis with other grantees upon landing at Vancouver International Airport (YVR). Given that we are meeting in an urban environment with plentiful taxis, there should be no need to rent a car during the Retreat. Rental car fees will only be reimbursed if necessary, for those driving to the Retreat. Please contact us if you have any questions.
Reimbursements: Grantees will be reimbursed for their travel to and from the Retreat, including ground transportation, airfare, and meals. Please see here for further information about the Foundation’s reimbursement guidelines.
All expense reports and receipts must be submitted through this portal no later than Friday, November 29, 2019.
We understand that some attendees may need to travel with family members. While we welcome this and appreciate the accommodations needed to attend this Retreat, we unfortunately are not able to cover travel costs for family members.
Once you have read through the following procedure information, you will be asked to create a User Account. After you create your User Account, you will be prompted to login to register for the Retreat. From within your account you will be able to download a reimbursement form for authorized expenses and upload the completed form along with your receipts.
The Moore Foundation Travel Policy exists to promote professional and ethical standards for travel activities and provide guidance for Grantees and representatives of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation who undertake travel for a Foundation-sponsored event.
Policy objectives are to comply with IRS rules governing expense reimbursement; communicate Foundation rules governing business travel; describe expenses eligible for reimbursement and outline the procedures to be followed.
As the steward of private resources that must be used in the public's interest, the Foundation expects participants to exercise prudent judgment when making travel decisions and arrangements, including but not limited to advance planning to obtain advantageous rates and avoidance of unnecessary cancellation charges.
